Oil Properties Chart for Lotion Making

When choosing carrier oils and butters for your project, whether it is a lotion, soap, or bath/body product, it is a good idea to keep various oil properties in mind (such as how quickly the oil sinks into the skin, whether it feels greasy, has an odor, is thick or thin, and what is it typically used for).

Having this information can make it easy to tailor recipes for certain skin types, or can help you to make good choices when replacing one oil for another so you can choose a replacement that is similar in feel and skin benefits.

I have been collecting information for quite a while to help me keep track of various properties and uses for different carrier oils and butters.    I thought I would share it here in case you might find it useful too.

This information is useful for both soap and lotion making, but the “typical usage” column in the chart is specifically for lotion making.

I am pasting the table below, but just in case it is too wide and scrolls off the page, you can also download the Excel file >> Oil Properties Chart for Lotion Making

This information came from various sources on the Internet that I came across during my research.  Sometimes it might have been soap making sites, or lotion making sites.  Sometimes it came from herbal sites.  Many times it came from product descriptions on vendor sites.

Please keep in mind that the “purported benefits” are only commonly held opinions and not medical advice.  There is no scientific proof, for example, that any oil can cure dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, or solve world hunger.   The purported benefits stated are just folk knowledge and common usage of the oils.

    1. 🙂 Thank you 🙂
Yes, I love my oils and butters! (But my pocketbook tends to disagree with me sometimes).
I love oil charts too, but they are constantly changing as new things are learned, new oils are added and etc.
